Lawrence Namoki is one of the finest contemporary Hopi artists of his time. His signature pottery almost seems to be made of wood rather than hand dug clay. His pottery is both carved and painted by hand with high detail. I find Lawrence both spiritual and a great teacher of Hopi beliefs. He is featured in many publications as well as Southwestern art magazine. You can find that artical online. One of Lawrence's claims to fame, besides his numerous awards, is that his pottery is displayed in the Smithsonian. Every line, symbol. and color represents something in his work. His craftsmanship shows great pride and his colors are made from minerals from the earth, amazingly enough.
This collectors Namoki pot features Hopi Taiowa the creator with his son Maussu. Maussu is the Hopi giver of life and death. This fine pot is one of Nomoki's finest and the pottery was prepared by him. Only minerals were used for paint. He has titled this work Fire Ceremony. Approx 4 1/2 by 4 inches. This is an amazing example of this masters work. Click this image for pricing.
Storytellers, or storyteller pottery, originated in the sixties on the Cochiti pueblo in New Mexico.
One of my favorite artists has to be Annette Romero. Annette still digs her own clay and hand forms every piece herself. She is extremely popular with collectors and has been known for custom orders and Nativity collections. These are usually larger than most with holy figures measuring five inches high. As an artist, Annette is modest and always a pleasure to patner with.
